Rusty Ruin Zone (original MIDI by King Meteor)
Jun Senoue

Had this one sitting around for a while, just never felt like taking the time to render it. I’ve always had an attachment to this version of the song, so here we are.

I probably did the most “tweaking” to this song than I have in quite a while. The tempo’s a bit slower (110bpm down to 105), I changed a couple of drum fills, etc.

Casino Night Zone 2P (Original MIDI version)

For those who are curious, this is what yesterday’s MP3 sounded like in its original MIDI form before I overlaid effects and better instruments. At least, this is what it sounds like on my hardware, anyway - I know King Meteor composes for Yamaha XG Synths specifically, so it probably sounds a little better to him.

I always feel kind of lame for just rendering out somebody else’s MIDIs to MP3, because it never feels like I do a ton to the songs to make them sound nicer, but I think the comparison here speaks for itself.

Out of curiosity, which are your favorite Sonic soundtracks?

This is a real tough one to answer. But you did say soundtracks, meaning I don’t have to just pick one - otherwise my brain would probably just completely shutdown from indecision.

Decided I needed to take a break from game creation today. I just finished Orbit Revolved yesterday, and I need some “me time” before diving in to the final game. This is what came out of that.

What kind of music do you like to listen to?

Anonymous

I am not actually a terribly picky music type, I guess. There’s only a few genres I will say I generally do not like - I’m not usually super in to most pop music, and there’s some country older country music that I absolutely cannot stand.

If it’s got a beat and a melody, though, I can get down with it. Alternative to that, I have been known to really dig hip hop and rap when the mood strikes me. Recently listened to some Digital Underground, so they’ve been on my mind a little. But mostly, I’m just one of those dorks who listens to videogame music. Some people would probably tell me that means I have bad taste in music, I don’t know.

I suppose I could just link you to my Last.FM profile, but that reveals two facts about me: #1. In all of the commotion of having a faulty HDD, there’s huge periods of listening habits that go unreported, and #2. I haven’t actually been listening to as much music as I used to.

Part of that is because I stopped listening to podcasts and started leaving more Youtube videos on in the background, so I get this huge backlog of podcasts. When I do have Winamp open, I’m generally catching up on those. Just the other day I was listening to episodes of the Giant Bombcast, MBMBAM and Idle Thumbs from October 2012, actually. Most of the time when I listen to music, it’s right before bed, and that’s not reported on by Last.FM - but that’s largely okay, because my music library hasn’t been growing at the rate it used to, either. My current library is sitting at around 20gb for a little under 8,500 files.

Sometimes I think I’m starting to get bored of my music collection but getting suggestions and buying music and all of that is more trouble than I feel like going through for as much of it as I listen to. Getting new music isn’t going to make me listen to more - I just nabbed the Anarchy Reigns soundtrack off of the FFShrines forums the other day and still haven’t actually cracked in to it. First world problems and all that.

Planet Wisp (Arrangement)
Original MIDI by Aivi Tran and Dave Harris

So as if my productivity wasn’t already shot today, I was given some hand-me-down electronics and spent most of the day fooling around with them - filling up an 8gb MicroSD card with higher quality versions of my music library, and playing with a tablet of questionable quality (it can barely even play MP4s I grab off Youtube).

The side effect of revisiting my music library is going back to old songs I’ve rendered in FL Studio. Such as this one. One day I will learn how to do drums and not embarrass myself - but at least the drums are a little better than my original attempt.

And now, off to bed while these files convert.

Ocean Base: Act 1
Original MIDI: King Meteor

I told myself yesterday that today was going to be a “no internet, all work” day but then I ended up sleeping in super late and now I’m in one of those “I can’t focus on anything” kind of moods. Despite this, I managed to focus long enough to churn this out on a whim.

Still have no idea how to do guitar.

Now to try and do real work, I guess.

Forest Frenzy
Dave Wise

Wait, is Tumblr seriously going to let me post two MP3s in one day?

Here’s something I just rendered out of FL Studio - another Donkey Kong Country song, this time for Forest Frenzy. I think it’s got a ways to go before I’ll be satisfied with it, but it’s a strong start.

Budweiser Frogs Technojam
Ryan Bloom

And here we are at the end of this musical journey through why I never create original songs - the “Budweiser Frogs Technojam”. Oh yes.

When I was in high school, the Budweiser Frogs were a “thing” - three frogs on a lily pad that when they all croaked in the correct order, said “Bud.” “Weis.” “Er.” This eventually blossomed out in to multiple other commercials featuring other animals and other locations.

In what could’ve been the first use of Flash I ever saw on the web, there was a website you could visit with clickable frogs allowing you to make them speak the phrase in any order. Well, I took it upon myself to rip those sound files and slot them in to that Mixman trial I was talking about yesterday, and this was the sad,  awful end result.
