Here, let’s have another Retro Engine Remastered song. This time, Metropolis Zone. Can’t tell the difference between this and the original? You probably haven’t listened to the original with headphones on recently.
Neat, the release of Sonic 2 iOS drew my attention to a tool that can unpack Sonic 1 iOS, and therefore get at the music files. Shame the bitrate isn’t higher, though (this was a 96kbps OGG that I converted to a 160kbps MP3. Probably not the smartest idea, but whatever).
THAT’S BRILLIANT. EVERYTHING’S BRILLIANT.
(this spoils how to access the new Hidden Palace stage for Sonic 2 on the iOS so don’t watch it if you want to find it yerself.)
How rude would it be if I said that I wasn’t entirely pleased with how the level is laid out? I mean, probably pretty rude, right?
I dunno. It feels a little haphazard. I don’t really get a “theme” from this stage, it just feels like a bunch of stuff thrown together now, I guess. It is better than most if not all fan interpretations of Hidden Palace Zone, though, and I’d imagine having to live up to a legacy like this would be supremely difficult.
The funny thing is I wouldn’t be this picky if it was just a hack. Maybe I’m the one with bearing a legacy! And I doubt I could design a better stage if it were me (though maybe I’d try and keep the dinosaur/lost world/ancient theme better).
But the way you access the stage is legitimately brilliant, though, and I still want to play this with a controller on a console (or a 3DS!)
Aww….They took out the song….
It’s important to note that it might not have actually been the Hidden Palace Zone song. “Song #10” was never confirmed by Sega to be for Hidden Palace; that’s just the music slot used by the garbled graphics version of HPZ in the final Sonic 2.
But it is entirely possible that at some point during development, slot #10 contained a different track entirely. Even when they published the song on the recent Sonic 1 & 2 Soundtrack collection, it was only ever referred to as “Unused Song”. They had a chance to state what it was for, and they did not confirm it was for Hidden Palace.
Some of the more musically oriented Sonic fans have also more recently pointed out the fact that the the “Song #10” track has a lot of similarities to the special stage music in Sonic 1. VERY early versions of Sonic 2 contained a LOT of content re-used from Sonic 1, so some have wondered if maybe Sonic 1’s special stage would have been carried over to Sonic 2 before they developed the pseudo-3D tube stages.
It makes more sense to use Mystic Cave Zone 2P’s song, because that’s what it was in all versions of the Sonic 2 Beta. It is way more likely that was the level’s original music, and I’m sure Taxman did his research and had better access to the source material than any fan did.
I may not be wetting my pants over Super Mario World's cave theme, but I still like it and rather miss it and the SMB2 underground theme. I like the original, don't get me wrong, but it seems like it's in every game now.
Well, again, it’s not terrible. It just isn’t the song. It’s super simple, super ambient.
What are some of your favorite remixes of Mario music? I'm interested in classic NES and SNES era stuff, specifically, but if you have some cool stuff from Galaxy or whatever I'm down on that as well.
There’s a problem here. I think I said this when I was asked about game music, but I don’t actually think Mario music is that listenable, for the most part. Don’t get me wrong - the Super Mario Bros. theme is crazy iconic, but I feel like each Mario game usually only has one or two songs like that and the rest are just kind of in the background. Because, like, nobody is wetting their pants with excitement over the Cave theme in Super Mario World.
There’s nothing wrong with this, of course. Mario Music is never actually bad, it’s just pointless outside of the context of the game. It provides the perfect ambiance for that specific moment in time, but you just can’t usually listen to it on its own.
It wasn’t until Super Mario Galaxy that I went “Wow, Mario music got awesome.”
That being said, I can still assemble a list for you. I wish I could provide more download links for this stuff, though. But linking Youtube is faster.
Do you like jazz music?
I like anything with a rhythm and usually a melody. I have been known to enjoy jazz, though I can’t really name any specific examples or anything.
What are some of your favorite game soundtracks?
Honestly, I don’t listen to music as much as I used to, and I’m starting to think maybe it’s because I’m tired of my music library. I also don’t feel like there’s any time to listen to music - it’s all podcasts, and youtube, and whatever else. Music is what I listen to as I fall asleep, now.
Of course, I say this, but then I make a really long post about a billion soundtracks. And these still aren’t even all my favorites.
Secret Base Zone
For reference, here’s what the original I did years ago sounds like. File date says 2008, but I’m pretty sure it’s from way before that.
Secret Base Zone Act 1 (Remastered)
Tatsuyuki Maeda, Yutaka Minobe
Did this a long time ago, had inspiration today to revisit it and see if I could do a better version. Turned out really well, I think. Original MIDI by Teck.
Sky Road Act 1
Tomoya Ohtani (?)
Here’s a song I ripped and wanted to include in the video review but did not.
