Remember how weird it is that they made cartoons out of what was technically “adult” material? Beetlejuice the movie was about a sleazy, foul-mouthed ghost who wanted to marry the (probably under-age!) Lydia so he could get out in to the real world. Say what you want about the character himself, but he was the closest thing that movie had to a bad guy; the big climax is defeating Beetlejuice and sealing him away again.

But now everybody’s friends! That whole nonsense about forced marriage is gone and Beetlejuice has become the equivalent of Bugs Bunny - benevolent in an “Ain’t I a stinker?” sort of sense.

It’s certainly not the first movie for this to happen to, either. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was a movie about a cross-dressing murderer, as revealed by seeing the outline of his penis. And yet…

Cartoons are weird.
