What are your thoughts on the 3DS XL?

If I buy a 3DS at this point, it will probably be a 3DS XL. That’s not to say I am unhappy with my current-sized DS, but a larger screen is an obvious improvement.

I’ve been meaning to get in contact with Nintendo to see if they’ll send me one, actually, since that is a thing I can apparently do now that TSSZ has enough clout (example: I got an advanced review copy of Dust: An Elysian Tail on Monday because I asked for one). I realize that’s probably entirely futile, though. Being sent $170 hardware is a “don’t call us, we’ll call you” sort of affair; but I am also a firm believer in “it never hurts to ask”.

True story: I woke up one morning in April 2006 thinking about how much I wanted to play The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, so on a whim I contacted Major Nelson (Larry Hyrb) and very, very politely asked him to send me an Xbox 360 because I was trying to break in to games journalism. To my surprise, he agreed - when he met up with me at E3 that year. That was probably him calling my bluff to an extent, since there was obviously no way I was getting in to E3 (if I couldn’t afford an Xbox, how would I afford travel and lodging?). Though I was mostly serious with the “I need to review the latest games, so I need the latest system” explanation I included in my plea. It was kind of a loser-ish thing for me to do in retrospect, but it’s also one of those things where you just never know until you try. Fortune favors the bold, and all of that.

Thankfully, later that year is when I won $1000 from Gametrailers for The Third Mario Brother, so I ended up buying an Xbox 360 for myself anyway.

But yeah. If I’m not mistaken, with Solus leaving TSSZ News, we’re now down our only staffer that had access to a 3DS. I’d like a 3DS, if only for Super Mario 3D Land, so one day those two points will intersect.
